Introduction to Judaism at Temple Shalom
The survey we did earlier this summer indicated that most folks thought that going back into the building would depend on rates going down, the environment being safe enough for schools to open, perhaps even a vaccine. While local rates are better than they were, we just think that this year we are better off at home, and most synagogues and other houses of worship in the area agree. Below is a tentative schedule with more details to follow.
We hope to have a safe, fun, outdoor gathering for Selichot, Saturday September 12, at which time we will also loan out prayer books, Gates of Repentance. Tentative schedule, links to be provided at a later date:.

We are an inclusive and diverse community whose members come from a variety of Jewish and not Jewish backgrounds. We embrace the meaning, inspiration, and ideals found in Reform Judaism. We offer religious and cultural education for children and adults and social events for all. We are guided by our Jewish teaching that all human beings are created in the image of God and carry within them the divine spark.
One in four Jewish women will be emotionally, sexually or physically abused in a relationship during her lifetime. Young women in dating relationships are not immune—yet young people are often not given the tools to recognize abusive behavior, nor the skills or self-esteem for building loving, respectful relationships. Since over 13, young people have participated in these peer-led, interactive, educational workshops for adolescent, teen, and young adult Jews ages All are framed within Jewish values.
Our workshops give all students, and especially boys and young men, critical opportunities to become positive role models and respectful relationship partners. We reach those at risk and those who have been victimized, opening dialogue for youth to talk about their relationships and learn how to help themselves or a friend. We have reached over 1, parents and youth leaders. Other programs include our website www.
The internship program mentors and trains young women to become dating violence peer educators. In addition, they gain skills in program development as well as a sense of empowerment and meaningful work experience in the Jewish community. As testimony to the success of the internship program, many former interns have remained committed to the issue of violence prevention long after their internship ended, and several have gone on to choose related careers in the field of domestic violence.
The experience they received here becomes a force for social change.

Village Shalom and our predecessor organizations have a tradition of quality, compassionate care dating back to the early s. Village Shalom traces its lineage to when a small contingent of Orthodox Jews met in a Kansas City storeroom to discuss care for the elderly. Ten years later, their vision began to assume tangible form with the chartering of the Moshav Zkeinim Home for the Aged Society in In , a room house at 29th and Troost was donated to the society by an oil magnate named Herman Appleman.
By the late s, several generous donors had provided enough funding for a much needed expansion. On September 3, , the Home for the Jewish Aged was dedicated. This new facility at 78th and Holmes would provide accommodations for up to 76 men and women. This number would increase to 90 after a expansion. The home underwent a subtle name change to the Jewish Home for the Aged in , as the organization had begun to care for a larger number of non-Jewish residents.
As the range of its services grew, the institution changed its name yet again in — becoming the Jewish Geriatric and Convalescent Center. A main reason for this change was the addition of short-term rehabilitation and convalescent care — a component that remains an essential part of our organization today.
